Abstract:

Notebook diary (55 p.) containing handwritten transcriptions by Jennie (Jane) Cullum of "interesting parts of Hattie and Ned's letters to the family that I wish to remember." The letters were written from California and Japan, 1858-1862, by Edwin (Ned) H. Sawyer, and his wife, Harriet (Hattie) Cullum Sawyer. Hattie describes in detail her observations of life among the natives in Aspinwall, Panama in 1858, and later in Mare Island, Calififornia, with much about personnel, cost of items, and daily activities. Other details include trips to San Francisco, Napa Springs, Green Valley, Geyser Mountains, and the Petrified Forest, and her fears in 1861 about the Civil War. She also describes festivities for the launching of the first U.S. war ship built on the Pacific Coast, Feb. 27, 1859, along with an account of the first Japanese war ship to visit California in March 1859, guided by a U.S. Navy Lieutenant. Ned's letters give a detailed account of the problems facing foreign merchants in Japan, and describes a visit to Yeddo [i.e. Tokyo], Japan, then closed to foreigners, where he was attacked by sword-wielding men, but escaped. Includes 8 pages of family genealogy and notes of important dates, many relating to the Sawyer's travels, along with a list of 136 paintings by Jennie Cullum, lists of books, other pictures, and curios owned by her, a list of marine algae with instructions for mounting them, and crocheting instructions. Also includes photocopies of 4 portrait photographs and a typescript transcription of excerpts from pages 1 through 55 of the notebook
